Nkisi (3D)

Kelham Island Museum - Saturday - 15.15 - 15.35

Her presence this year is an output of the collaborative Music/AR project "Totemon Rising" with Gabber Modus Operandi. She's not here in person this, but the music they created for this No Bounds x Yes No Wave commission will be output on the 3D HISS soundsystem in Kelham Island on Saturday Afternoon. See Lineup tab for detail.

As co-founder of NON Worldwide, whose raison d’etre is described as “a collective of African artists and of the diaspora, using sound as their primary media, to articulate the visible and invisible structures that create binaries in society, and in turn distribute power”, Nkisi’s ethos and music is imbued with a certain punk sensibility along with a political push back against conformity. Her DJ sets draw from a wide range of influenced forming a fast paced and exhilarating experience in the dance. Her production reflects deeply in these influences also and provide a sound that is equally relentless and evocative.

In the last couple of years, London-based Nkisi’s radio shows on NTS and DJ sets at the Endless club-night have marked her out as a real original. Her style is unique, meshing hard techno and gabber beats with pan-African drum rhythms, pairing IDM electronics with juke house, and creating all manner of refreshing composites. Her productions, appearing on labels such as Warp’s club-focused imprint Arcola and Rush Hour offshoot MW, combine all these parts to fashion something beyond rigid genre classification.
