Big Ang came through Sheffield’s Niche era, when speed garage was getting tougher, cheekier, and proudly northern. Two decades later, few things sound as Sheffield as one of her basslines quaking beneath 800 voices roaring the chorus in unison.
In 2005, her version of Deborah Cox’s 'It’s Over Now' reached the UK Top 30. But Big Ang’s legacy writhes on dancefloors: 'Wifey' the massive collaboration with Sheffield’s bassline vocal queen Sibahn, 'Catch the Light', 'U Sure Do', plus god knows how many white labels and edits, which have been passed between DJs for years, secret weapons all. Basslines wobble, organs flare, vocals hit the heart and the feet, as rooms seem to burst open.
Still, leave any trainspotter tendencies in the cloakroom. This is guttural, visceral music, tunes you remember for how they make you feel, not by track name. Yes, you can hear Big Ang’s influence throughout the current garage and bassline wave, but as they're catching up, she's already moved on.
