This talk explores the idea of creativity not as a privilege, but as a basic human right essential to freedom of expression, education, and personal growth. Bringing together voices from the National Literacy Trust and Pattern and Push—a Sheffield based organisation working in the youth justice sector—the session will examine how creativity empowers young people, particularly those from marginalised communities, to reclaim agency and imagine new futures. Through discussion and lived experience, our speakers will highlight the transformative role of literacy, storytelling, and artistic practice in building resilience, fostering belonging, and supporting rehabilitation. Together, we will ask: What happens when society recognises creativity as a fundamental right, and how can we ensure access for all?
