Discourse Strand: State of Independents — From Grassroots to International
Independent record labels have long been at the forefront of shaping underground music and cultural identity in the UK. In this session, we invite leading figures from the independent sector — including label managers and team members from WARP Records, Central Processing Unit (CPU), and Off Me Nut Records — to reflect on the evolution of their labels, from DIY beginnings rooted in local communities to international recognition and influence.
Our discussion will move across three key lines of enquiry:
1. Building and Sustaining a Label —
What does it mean to run an independent label today? From the importance of early relationships to the pressures of data-driven decision making, we’ll consider how labels build identity, adapt to industry shifts, and foster strong artist–label relationships.
2. Advice for New Founders — What are the hidden challenges and underrated skills needed to run a label? What advice would established labels give to those starting out today, and what would they change about the industry if given the chance?
3. Guidance for Artists — How do artists and labels find each other? What makes an artist stand out, and how should they approach a label? We’ll explore what being signed really means, the expectations on both sides, and how artists can contribute to the life of a label beyond their music. By drawing on experiences from grassroots scenes to global stages, the conversation will examine the state of UK independents in 2025, the communities they sustain, and their enduring role in shaping underground culture.
