Eleanor Hooper – Go Gather Bones
Go Gather Bones is an evolving musical exploration of a deep connection with
places in the Peak District as sonic collaborators, using field recordings, deep
listening, vocal improvisation and bio-sonification of plants in these locations.
Compositions have grown through being open to how the land sings through me,
finding intonations, phrasings and melodies unusual to me and, at times, deeply
keening. Walking out on my own, mainly at dusk, singing into and from the land,
improvising with the free time created as the plants electrical signals trigger
fragments of field recordings and sampled acoustic instruments, I have been
struck by the depth of jamming and communication available here. When a roaring
helicopter passes overhead, her bilberry leaves stop singing, as I do.
The music comes out of Wet Withens Stone Circle and Barrow, the Seven Stones
of Hordron, and the ancient drovers path and woods in and around Lawrence Field.
Eleanor Hooper is a Sheffield-based singer, composer and sound artist making
lyrical, voice-centred work that moves between song, sound art and installation.
Using layered vocals, extended voice, reverb and delay, she composes and
produces sound design for interactive light and sound sculptures. Her practice is
rooted in deep listening. She facilitates voice-led sound baths, leads deep listening
sessions in nature, and her recordings carry themes of ecology, memory and
embodied experience, including her debut EP FIBRES and the track ‘Sunshines On
A Fallen Tree.
As co-director of Pif-Paf, she is currently touring the outdoor sculpture installation ...And Breathe.
