Kakuhan is a Japanese duo blending algorithmic, electronic rhythms with acoustic cello, creating futuristic soundscapes that defy traditional categories like composition vs. improvisation or traditional vs. contemporary.
Founded by Koshiro Hino (of the group goat) together with cellist Yuki Nakagawa, their music evokes comparisons ranging from Photek to Autechre in terms of rhythmic complexity, but also draws on emotive cello lines reminiscent of Arvo Pärt and Arthur Russell.
Rai Tateishi is a Japanese musician and virtuoso of traditional bamboo flutes such as the shinobue and shakuhachi.
His debut solo album, titled Presence, was released in 2025 on the Nakid label and produced by Koshiro Hino (also of Goat and Kakuhan). The album is an improvisational exploration of extended flute techniques, featuring instruments like the khene mouth organ and Irish flute, all recorded in single takes without overdubs
